About Us
Brightwell sells lighting for the outside of a house. Wall sconces, hanging lanterns, ceiling fittings, bollards, path lights and solar accents. A small number of our pieces are dry location fittings meant for a hallway, a stairway or a boot room, and those are labelled as indoor on the page and in the title, so you are never guessing which is which.
We started Brightwell because buying outdoor lighting online is unnecessarily hard. Listings tell you a fitting is "waterproof" without saying to what standard. They quote a wattage but not a lumen output. They show a fixture on a white background and leave you guessing how big it actually is, or whether it belongs on an exposed gable or under a porch roof. You find out which when it arrives, or worse, a winter later.
What we do differently
Every product page here states four things in plain language: what the fixture is made of, how big it is, how much light it puts out, and exactly what weather it can take. If a piece is rated IP65 we say it can sit in full exposure with nothing overhead. If it is rated IP44 we say it wants some shelter. And if a fitting is beautiful but rated for dry locations only, we say that too, on the page, rather than letting you discover it when the finish lifts.
That last one costs us sales. We would rather lose the order than take a return and a bad review from someone who put an indoor lantern on a garden wall because nobody told them not to.
We list the real options, not invented ones
The sizes, wattages, finishes and colour temperatures on a product page are the ones the workshop actually makes. It is common in this trade to pad a listing with size and colour choices that do not exist, so the page looks generous and the order arrives as something else. We check our option lists against the workshop's own specification and remove anything that is not real, even when that leaves us with fewer choices to sell than the shop next door.
Where our lighting is made
Our fixtures are made by workshops in China, and each order ships direct from the workshop that made it rather than out of a warehouse of ours. We say so plainly because it explains two things you will notice. It is why a well made outdoor sconce here costs what it does rather than carrying an importer's markup on top, and it is why delivery takes longer than a next day parcel.
Most orders arrive within one to two weeks, and a handful of pieces take up to thirty days. The estimated window is printed on each product page and comes from that particular workshop, not from an average across the catalogue. Full detail is on our Shipping Policy page.
How we choose what to sell
We look for fixtures that are well made for what they cost, in materials that survive outside: powder coated aluminium, stainless steel, cast metal, tempered and optical glass. Aluminium over iron wherever the piece will sit in the weather, because iron rusts and aluminium does not. Integrated LEDs where a sealed unit makes sense, and standard E26 bulb fittings where you should get to choose the colour and brightness yourself.
About our photographs
The lead image on each product is our own, made to show the fitting in the kind of setting it belongs in and at the hour it is actually used. The images that follow are the workshop's own photographs of the item itself, which is the honest way to show you the real thing rather than an interpretation of it. A cutout on a white background tells you nothing about what a fixture does to a space, and what a fixture does to a space is the only reason to buy one.
