Description

The Thatch is a small open cage pendant that runs on solar, offered with either an iron frame or a woven rattan one. The two versions read quite differently: the iron is graphic and slightly industrial, the rattan is softer and more farmhouse in feel. Both hang from a chain and neither needs any wiring, which is the point of the fixture.

This is decorative lighting in the most literal sense. At 6 lumens it produces a soft glow, the equivalent of a candle in a lantern rather than a working light. Hung in a group of three or five under a pergola, along a covered walk or through the branches of a tree, that low output is exactly right and a brighter version would ruin it.

It is rated IP44, which handles rain but is best under a beam or a canopy rather than fully exposed to driving weather. It arrives preassembled and needs no electrician, no transformer and no cable run. Site the group where the panels catch a few hours of direct sun during the day, since that is what carries them through the evening. Its open cage frame lets the glow spill outward in every direction.

  • Choice of iron frame or woven rattan cage
  • Open cage frame, glow spills in every direction
  • Solar powered, no wiring needed

  • Iron version: 18 cm wide, 18 cm high
  • Rattan version: 22 cm wide, 18 cm high

Thatch Solar Cage Pendant, Iron or Rattan Hanging Solar Garden Light f

Hung In Small Groups

Hung in a group of three or five under a pergola, along a covered walk or through the branches of a tree, this comes into its own. A single one is a small point of light. The group is what makes the effect.

Outdoor lighting in use

Candle Glow, Not Brightness

At 6 lumens this is the equivalent of a candle in a lantern rather than a working light. The open cage lets that glow spill outward in every direction, and a brighter version would ruin the effect it is built for.

Iron Or Woven Rattan

The two versions read quite differently: the iron frame is graphic and slightly industrial at 18 cm wide, the woven rattan softer and more farmhouse at 22 cm. Both hang from a chain, arrive preassembled and are rated IP44, so keep them under cover.

Frequently asked questions

Iron or rattan, which should I choose?

They read quite differently. The iron frame is graphic and slightly industrial and measures 18 cm wide by 18 cm high. The woven rattan cage is softer and more farmhouse in feel at 22 cm wide by the same height. Both are the same solar fixture underneath, so the choice is purely how you want it to look.

How much light does it give?

0.06W and 6 lumens, which is a soft candle style glow rather than a working light. That is deliberate. Hung in a group of three or five under a pergola or through a tree, the low output is exactly right, and something brighter would spoil the effect entirely.

Does it need any wiring?

No. It is solar powered and arrives preassembled, so there is no electrician, no transformer and no cable run. It charges through the day and switches on at dusk by itself. Site the group where the panels catch a few hours of direct sun, since that is what carries them through the evening.

Can it hang in an exposed spot?

It is rated IP44, so it handles rain but is best under a beam or a canopy rather than fully exposed to driving weather. A pergola, a covered walkway or a sheltered tree position all suit it. Remember the solar panel still needs daylight, so avoid deep permanent shade.

How do I hang it?

It hangs from a chain and comes preassembled, so the work is choosing the height and fixing a hook to the beam or the branch. Because it is only 18 cm high in both versions, staggering the drops across a group of three or five gives a better result than one level line.
